The new year brings back some of the best of last year – our DJ for Love series. We have been eagerly anticipating bringing one of Taiwan’s homegrown top DJs, DJ Noodles, to ChingChuan. ChingChuan has been a part of the Bright Side neighborhood since we visited in 2011 and we’ve known Noodles for many years even before that – having our two worlds meet felt like coming full circle.
We began this event with a little something new – decorating the indoors and inviting the kids into the “party” with darkened room and loud beats, DJ Noodles serving as the headliner for this act. Peeping into the windows, kids were super excited and had a high sense of anticipation of what was to come. After being let into the decked out classroom, their loud excited voices at first became quiet and shy. Thankfully, this was not to last!
DJ Noodles began to spin and through the pure magic of music and also with the aid of some excited TaoShan Elementary School teachers hyping up the energy, the kids loosened up. Each and every child had a chance to head up to the podium and give spinning a shot, sharing the spotlight with others. Afterwards, the kids split into groups to practice on one of the three stations and the DJ assistants all shared their skills and knowledge with the children. Through this music creativity, it provided a form of therapy and self understanding different than the courses we’ve brought before that was more through the expression of a paintbrush or cooking.
The complicated rhythms and techniques, listening carefully and coordinating hand skill motions with intent, took focus to a whole new level. Through this form of music creativity, a form of therapy as they used it as an outlet to arrange and rearrange music with varying volumes, brought out a new side to some of the children. Those that might not have been focused or have found interest in their regular school work were able to zero in on music and learn new technology.
We were amazed that this workshop went above and beyond simply music. Not only did the class and DJ Noodles talk about stereotypes of the DJ in the stigmas they face and also how genders are perceived, but broke them. DJ Noodles even brought in some safety tips for social interactions in some venues that DJing may take place. We love these hands on real life lessons that come with the workshops!
With the props and also vivid clothing sponsored by Judge apparel, the youth then morphed into a new persona filled with confidence and poise. In their new gear, heads nodding with the bpm, scratching, and hands raised udring sound effects, they became more comfortable with understanding themselves and creating music. Some of the shyest children took to DJing like professionals on their first try.
During the station changes kids were also asked to write down some of their favorite music and what they wanted to share with others. We got to understand the music interest of the kids in ChingChuan and more the world they live in and their access of media and information. We were also fortunate to have a small legion of backup “dancers” as assistants this time; more importantly one of our Brighter Futures youth from Taoyuan who has been back to Bright Side workshops as a Bright Side Big Friend – definitely looking forward to seeing him more!
Keeping true to our claims that education takes place beyond the class room, we had our posse head outside with their flashy thread and upcycled props with DJ Noodles MCing and taking us on a small adventure through the beautiful scenery surrounding Taoshan Elementary School. We hope you can also see the brilliant colors and the smiles on their faces as they paraded with our upcycled props through the school making for a striking figure and pop of color against the beautiful scenery of the school and rivers.
Thank you Noodles for this amazing session! We hope that you will continue to support kids in their endeavor to learn and our intent on providing them with the full diversity of learning experiences.

Mini Me:
“Mini Me” is a series of empowerment and therapeutic art courses that commands an introspection of knowing oneself first, and thus, how to interact with others. Through innovative, creative forms and guidance of Big Friends, students will learn valuable tools to tap their “inner child” and express themselves so they can compassionately communicate and connect with others.
