Ruby Wei:

NEIGHBORHOOD INTERVIEW|Ruby Wei
We were very fortunate to have Ruby join us in 2025 !
Ruby has been an amazing addition to our intern roster for the 2025-2026 year. She’s an empathetic and cheerful person always wanting to learn and brings with her sunshine and smiles. As a masterful artist, she created many of our beautiful props for the workshops and charity fundraiser. We love having Ruby as part of the Bright Side Projects family and welcome you to get to know one of the kids’ favorite Big Friends in her interview!
Daisy: How and when did you find out about Bright Side Projects and what made you want to become an intern?
Ruby Wei: I first saw the call-out regarding an internship for Bright Side Projects on the National Culture and Arts Foundation website in October last year. After reading through the post, I was very drawn to it and visited the official website. I found their creative education curriculum for children very interesting—it combines education and art to inspire children through engagement rather than using traditional teaching methods. This aligns closely with what I am currently studying. I hoped to use my own strength to learn alongside children and the elderly!

D: What do you think are unique characteristics to Bright Side Projects from other organizations?
R: Bright Side is different than what the public generally perceives from anon-profit organization. It uses creative education to cultivate children’s worldviews and emotional expression; it’s not just about finishing a single class or a test. Instead, the goal is for children to carry these abilities into their future lives.
What impressed me most was what Daisy told us before my first workshop: “Kids might want to have physical contact such as a hug. If you are uncomfortable, you can directly refuse and offer an alternative to the kids on how they should greet you or what your limits are. This also empowers them because they learn that they have the right to say no when they encounter similar or a physical contact they don’t like.” By allowing us to maintain our own bodily boundaries during class while teaching them that “saying no” is a valid option. Additionally, after the activities, we share our experiences and feelings. Daisy mentioned she avoids terms like “help” or “underprivileged.” I realized then that the words we use in daily life can carry a sense of inequality. Though these are small details, everyone is equal and learning from one another. When you truly believe this, your choice of words and your perception naturally evolves.
D: Any memorable moments in the workshops with the children?
R: During the “DJ for Love” event in December (December 13th, 2025 featuring DJ Marcus Aurelius) I got to experience so called being a “leader of the pack” as I led my own small group of kids! The children in Wanhua were so enthusiastic and treated us like friends. They shared stories about their classmates and their musical talents. The younger ones would want to play together and ask for hugs. Beyond finding friendship while being in the workshop, we also learned how to operate the DJ console together, swagged to the music, and joined a street DJ party. These were all brand-new experiences for me and were truly memorable. One child even gave me a drawing of the two of us—it was adorable!
Working with our older friends to make flowers from upcycled plastic bottles was also unforgettable. The grandpas and grandmas were adorable and, in many ways, just like children. I remember a few grandmas saying they didn’t want to do it, or that their eyesight was poor, or that their cutting was “ugly.” By constantly encouraging and praising them, the radiant smiles on their faces when they finished was so genuine. One grandma felt dizzy easily but still wanted to participate, so I held her hand while we worked together. It made me think of my own grandmother. We spoke in Taiwanese the whole time, and I realized my Taiwanese has gotten quite rusty!
D: Has this internship or moments in interacting with children through Bright Side Projects brought about any changes in how you approach issues/kids in the future?
R: When children asked me during an activity if I would come back next time, I realized I couldn’t make a direct promise unless I was certain. Children don’t understand why someone might not show up; they only remember that someone broke a promise. Because of this, I take promises much more seriously now. If I say I will do something, I must do it. It’s about being responsible to others and to myself.

D: How has it been working in the office as an intern and being able to tie that in with the importance of the work Bright Side does with the children when you see their faces?
R: Preparation before an event is very different from the actual experience. Pre-event work involves preparing materials, hand-made props, demos, and running through the entire flow. Completing the handmade props gives me a great sense of achievement, especially when they help the event run smoothly.
During the actual event, there are many unexpected variables that require high levels of focus and energy. However, interacting with different people is inherently fascinating. I enjoy the atmosphere of the classes, learning from everyone, and being “healed” by the lovely children.
D: Are there any personal achievements you have overcome or any of your talents you discovered during this internship that will impact your life in the future?
R: It has to be participating in the charity dog-themed activity in February! (February 1st, 2026)
I used to be terrified of dogs; I would avoid them at all costs and never dared to touch them. But that day, I overcame my fear. I tried taking a dog named Kippy for a walk, and Kippy actually decided to go to the bathroom right on the crosswalk! I was panicked, so I rushed Kippy back and found Daisy to help clean it up. There were many big dogs there, but they were actually incredibly well-behaved. Spending the day with them made me realize how cute they are—like the Golden Retriever who would nudge its way in for attention while I was petting other dogs. Through this activity, while I’m still not an expert attaking care of dogs, I am no longer afraid of them. I can interact with them now and realize how wonderful they are!

D: What are your hopes for the children or what you can do?
R: I hope all children can grow up healthy, safe, and happy in a wholesome environment, learning how to solve problems and manage/express their emotions. I hope to accompany them whenever I can join activities, so that when they grow up, they can look back and remember a fun “big sister.”
Welcome to join in our events or if you can read and write Mandarin fluently, join us as an intern!
