And we’re back to ChingChuan again! This time we left Taipei at 05:30 in the morning to start a half-day course with the kids. Only the strongest of strong passionate volunteers made it that day and I had landed back from a weeklong trip to Hong Kong just the night before.
Due to the early morning hours, instead of lunch we decided to host a breakfast with the children and give everyone a treat – a variety of blueberry, banana, chocolate chip pancakes!

Nine rolls of film were developed (unfortunately one of the kids never returned his disposable camera) in hopes the kids could begin their storyboards and narration, cutting out and creating moving pieces from the stack. However, with the weather and a double/triple last minute booking it was hard to gather the specific kids who turned the disposable cameras. We made the most of the time, armed with the delicious pancakes made by Chieni and her daughters. Fed small army and proceeded to create Phenakistoscope with the children.

Class ended by noon but we stayed to understand the history of ChingChuan and chatting with a local owner of an amazing café and hostel – which we now have accommodations at! Bonding with the children and adults in the community, the volunteers that made this trip became even more dedicated and determined to come back and make a difference (100% of them came for the next course in December). The beauty of Chingchuan never ceases, with the chill in the foggy crisp mountain air warmed by the community.
