A challenging illustration workshop bringing in self-introspection was brought to our older friends in Nangang – we were happy to collaborate with Long Long for a colorful and expressive Mini Me workshop that allowed us and our friends to get to know each other and themselves even more.

10 years ago, we met Long Long in our first BUILD A HOME with children at Taoyuan MuHsiang Children’s Home and a decade later, we coincidentally have her back to host a Mini Me illustration workshop with older persons as part of our 2024 BUILD A HOME program. While we have worked hard since January to make the community center more welcoming and a blank canvas for our older friend’s artworks, we really wanted a piece of their sunny presence on the walls.

Hand dexterity and observation skills were integrated in as they first utilized water colors to form some basic shapes and lines that would be later utilized. Each had a “partner” that they faced to draw, using their keen observation and being able to draw. It’s always so fascinating to see not only what the other person sees in us, but then how we draw ourselves. It was very interesting in drawing each other they came close to providing replicas of what they viewed in contrast to them what they saw and drew of themselves in the mirrors. This was a combination of them giving the space to draw themselves in their favorite outfits but we also saw them being greatly inspired whether it be by others and the scenery around them, or their neighbors (if one wore a blouse the other wanted one too).  Some took this approach and others, while claiming they did not know how to draw, then with gentle and insistent calls of them to have confidence in themselves, slowly etched out scenes from their lives – their favorite fruits, people that were a part of their loves, some having never fully been a part of having been given the chance to start drawing without restrictions to finishing a masterpiece that they were proud of and wanted to show and explain to others. We loved learning so much more about their stories that were achieved through such traditional mediums of art but also look forward to the future forms of art and communication.

What we learned from this was to surround ourselves with love and inspiration as it always comes back to being a part of who we are. We can also learn how to inspire and lead others. This is so empowering! Bright Side Projects wants to continue to lead the way to a better future and better lives, getting to know ourselves and each other is just one of those ways!

Thank you to Long Long, than you to our Big Friends, thank you to social workers, thank you our older friends who taught us so much and continue to teach us everyday. May we all continue find beauty and inspiration in each other!
