We have been looking forward to this African drumming class since the previous year! One of our Big Friends and Bright Side supporters and members, Sara, mentioned that this might be a workshop that would be great to have with our older friends and we were ecstatic to have made connections to make this happen!
(Fablan Samory Toure), thanks to an extended invitation from Janet Lin, drove up from ChiaYi with African drums loaded into his car for this amazing session. Watching with interest of the drums being carried in, a buzz of excitement hummed in the newly renovated community center.
With his booming voice and charismatic presence, the session started before anyone had known it. We went over the time that we had estimated in the rundown with so much laughter and smiles as everyone was so focused and anticipated each flick of the wrist. There were those who at the start of the class said they would not be able to follow the class but ended up performing amazingly. They were so dedicated that a few had small bruises from drumming too fervently (we had to ask them to dial it back).
We also looked up a refreshing tea that is also commonly enjoyed in Africa, surprisingly ourselves and the grandmas with it’s delicious and soothing flavor – they got out their refillable water bottles up to fill it to the brim to take some home!
We capped off the day with a miniature group performance surrounded by African masks that they had made the week prior. What a beautiful day full of music, love, and group harmony that was tapped out with the harmonized drumming and hand raises. Thank you so much Fablan Samory Toure and Janet Lin! This special class taught with such intensity and dedication. It’s beautiful to be able to share and learn about a different culture and method of communication through music!
