The new year started with Kids for Kids Initiative and there could have been no one more suitable for this than Samantha Lin (Sasa Sparkle), a professional young ice skater based in Taiwan – one we are so fortunate to have that also generously wanted to share her skills and time with our kids!
As we filed into the ice skate arena, kids were patient with trying on their shoes and helping each other with knee pads and the full gear that ensured safety. Sasa was always around to give a helping hand and assist in tying any loose ice skate shoe strings before we finally took ourselves onto the ice. The majority of us had huge hesitancies – definitely adults included – while a few of the the children who had never skated before took to it like fish in water and effortlessly glided.
The smiles on their face was infectious as you could see it light up as they realized this new sport was something that they could do – not only do but also be the pros and teachers for the rest of us. They were excellent little helpers for teacher Sasa and became our personal cheerleaders as they guided us around. Sasa provided some fundamental skills and also higher level skills to some of those who had a natural knack for the ice.
Seeing her take some of the kids on a full circle skate around the entire parameter of the rink was heartwarming. After they had their one on one lessons, they courageously went on their solo exploration. Those that still had some barriers in standing and moving around had assistance of friends and fun equipment on the rink and we say that they definitely improved by the end and you could see the confidence in their more upright posture and their willingness to go further out into the rink with less guidance from others.
Overall it was a huge success with lot of smile and hugs for both Teacher Sasa and her wonderful mommy Cindy! The kids did not want to leave the ice after our two hours was up!
The sign up for the kids this time were a handful less than we anticipated but that is always to be expected. With something new like this always takes a little while for the kids to understand and there’s always some apprehension. We know that continuing this route in feeds into kids passion and their hunger to try and learn new things. We applaud these kids who are always so high spirited and willing to try new things!
This year 2026 celebrates our 10th year of the Kids for Kids, an initiative we kickstarted in 2016. Kids for Kids is where in an act of love, kids empower other kids through fundraising and other forms of support. Bright Side Projects offers so many more opportunities and ways for any of any age to express love and wanting to give back to their communities!
