With the pressure of upcoming exams, we were pleasantly surprised and honored that our workshop at FUKID was so popular, filling up fast with several names on the waitlist. Teacher Kuo told us that ever since we first visited in 2013, Bright Side activities are increasingly popular with the children in the area. (ENG BELOW)

Who doesn’t love the thought of creating mini exploding volcanoes? This Mad Scientist edu-course is one of Bright Side Projects core workshops that masterfully combines environmentalism, geography, art, chemistry, and film-making into an non-stop exciting day. From using expired flour and tossed away cardboard boxes, kids made volcanoes from scratch and painted the backdrop to set up for a fun science experiment. During the clay making with flour, choruses of kids laughing and exclaiming “this is so fun!” could be heard through the hallway!

For lunch, Teacher Rhea tried their hand at pesto risotto which turned out absolutely delicious! Perfectly paired with the ever popular fruit salad. The children who arrived early helped with the cutting of the fruit and during our rest break at lunchtime we encountered our touching Bright Moment of the Day.

One of the adorable kids, who has always been very energetic and playful jumping round during activities, took it upon himself to feed a younger child one spoonful at a time. His first trial was an aggressive approach to force a spoonful of risotto into the child’s mouth but soon changed his tune, coaxing the child to finish his meal using a softer tone. He was so pleased with his success he looked around to see who else was not finished and ran over to “help” out. We hope that workshops can continue to not only bring education and knowledge, but also be a safe spaces setting up these moments of compassion and interaction, encourage kids to be kind and caring.

As much as we love heading to Taitung, the resources in both fund and time is a heavy toll for Bright Side Projects. We would love to have more Big Friends join us who are based in Taitung or Southern Taiwan. We are always on the lookout for Big Friends who have skills and knowledge to share as teachers – please contact us!
