As part of our Art Empowerment for our older friends, we began our BUILD A HOME project in 2024 at Nangang and after the revamping of the center that serves as a the heart of the community, we invited our graffiti / and renowned artist Colasa to create a space that would truly brighten the space and breathe life into it.

We wanted everyone to know that graffiti is not simply a form of what it might be seen – vandalism – but a form of art and self expression. We have all seen it in various shapes and forms and empowering us to have another medium to communicate with is important and should not be overlooked.

After going over some forms of street art, we first started with stencils so that they could see how pencil, paper, and scissors could be implement as part of the artform. A wooden board thanks to Stef Pei was presented so they could have a hand at spray painting shapes and tagging freely outside various colors and lines or attempt their name. We were fortunate to have a bit of sunshine after the rainy days for this outside jaunt before heading back into the center.

With having so many years of experience, Colasa was not only professional but a delight to work with and integrated well with our older friends. A sketch was already proposed to the older folks who loved the bright colors which we knew matched their vivid personalities the two years we have been friends with them. Outlines of spaces and colors were implemented and everyone was assigned their tasks. We all took turns watching each other meticulously work on painting the shapes because we all knew that this group effort was to benefit the entire community.

In awe, everyone that took turns on sitting down while watching others at work were quiet in marveling as the progress continued. They worked faster than anticipated and we underestimated the height on which our friends could reach and bend to complete this totally gorgeous and IG friendly wall. We finally have the shaping of a space in gorgeous hues that match their beautiful personalities and the smiles on everyone’s faces was so striking.

For weeks afterwards this special group of individuals proudly introduced the walls as something they created and how it came to be. We are so blessed to have Janet Lin for recommending Colasa. We are so blessed to have Colasa see how his artwork and sharing his skills can bring so much joy and make a difference to this world. So many other workshops hosted at the center began to use these beautiful amoeba and heart shaped splatters as backdrops for theri photos. Let’s never forget what a beauty and joy a person can be capable of and that we can have a hand in making this world into a brighter place, one brush stroke at a time.

We loved working with him and he was such a treasure to have! We also want to thank our Brighter Futures youth Nat for coming out to help with photos and take his professionalism of videography to another level.

Thank you to for people who contributed to this project and those who donated some supplies such as artist REACH with additional  spray paint cans Ron from WRONG Gallery with frames so we could grab some images.
