Via plant-based food and creations, we are able to introduce yet again Day of the Dead to the kids and this time to the indigenous Amis in Taitung! English Below.

Via plant-based food and creations, we are able to introduce yet again Day of the Dead to the kids and this time to the indigenous Amis in Taitung! Other than focusing on the basic origins of Day of the Day to dispel any misconception that this is “Mexican’s Halloween” we wanted to first start with the origins and reasons for celebration, then lead into the cultural appropriation that may have misled anyone to believe it was simply a Halloween celebration.

We were so fortunate that Teacher Hsiung was there to assist with leading the workshop painting on tins (donated and upcycled) that served as the flower pots. Marigolds were locally sourced and planted, explaining to children the significance of the particular type of flowers utilized during the celebration of life and death, and also to show the circular cycle of life.

Simple skull necklaces were also made, crated from upcycled expired flour, molded into shapes as some simple designs from Day of the Dead were incorporated.

The workshop took place over the entire course of a day with the origins, discussion, sketching, and transferring the final art onto the tins. After the beautiful marigolds were planted we told kids some basics on flower care – very exciting to see that in December, some of the kids were still taking excellent care of these! It does take our Taipei based team more time and resources to get to Taitung so hope everyone can support us in 2018 for a sustainable presence in the kids lives as our friendships blossom.
